I often find myself giving doctors a bad rap when it comes to weight loss care and obesity treatment.  I use my own experience and in the back o f my mind I start thinking “Well on all the other fronts he seems like a good doctor.”  Then I run across something like this report included in this video and I am reminded that obesity is a problem on many fronts.  One of which is fair treatment of the individual.

Imagine if you will walking into your doctor and telling them you have a symptom that may be extremely important if you where normal weight and they would run all kinds of tests to find out what was going on.  The same symptoms on an obese person might get, oh that is just a symptom of  your weight,  loose some weight and lets see if it continues.

Take a look at the video clip …

Obesity doesn’t pay at the doctor’s office

Now we all know that not all doctors are the same.  I don’t want to start another prejudice in this country we have enough as is.  What I will say over and over again is if your doctor won’t talk honestly with you about your weight, find one that will.  Do not go years with the idea it is all your fault and all you have to do is work harder and eat less.  Also be wary when they go to the other extreme and tell you that you have no self control so the only answer is surgery or pills.

Find a doctor that will discuss your options fully and look at you like a regular person with a medical condition, not some one that they don’t want to take proper care of because they judge you as someone that doesn’t want to take care of yourself.

I want to thank the folks at Obesity Thunder Bay for their emails bringing this type of information to my attention.  The more you know the better you can take care of yourself.

It appears today in the news that there is some proof that loosing weight alleviates sleep disorders in men.  I suppose next we will see that it helps women as well.  There appears that sleep disorders are seeing more attention as weight issue are being covered more often in our country.

Often I hear from spouses that they don’t know how to tell their husbands that for their health they need to loose some weight.  Get familiar with the symptoms of sleep apnea and perhaps you can get them to take a look from there.  I went to the edge with not getting proper sleep for over 5 years.  The sad thing was no on bothered to mention that sleep apnea also can contribute to weight gain on top of it all.

Before Run

New Me, New Car, First race. Life is good

Well I made it! I know for those of you that run a lot that a 5k is like a walk in the park. But for a guy that used to get winded walking up one flight of stairs or from running one street sign to the next, it was a mile stone. Official time for me was 37′ 49″.  Comes out to an average of just over a 12 minute mile. I am like a teenager in a candy store wired and fired up. My goal was to beat 42 mins as that was my best training time and I got that.  My son had gone out and got me one of the new Ipod Nanos so that I could use it to encourage my running.   That or see how fast I would have a heart attack and he would get an early inheritance (lol just kidding 8-) )  So I was all geared up.  Nike+ is a great tool for a newbie runner!

Now to put it into perspective it was almost 2 times the winners time. So no “I coulda been a contender” statement from me. I finished strong and enjoyed the run. I do believe I have been set free of the worry about my joints, my heart, my blood pressure, and my overall ability to hang in there and go for it. A lot to learn from in under an hour but worth every step of it.

The race is On!

The race is On!

So my question to anyone that stumbles across this is this: What the heck are you waiting on to do something in your life that makes you feel great? What have you thought about and passed out of your mind as something you would never be able to do? Can you break it down into something you can prepare for? Can you take a chance even if you fail? (I would encourage more training before doing a running goal) What would it be? Still some time in this year to do something that is great to you, GO FOR IT!

Over wieght and obese

Over wieght and obese

This week is a time of reflection for me.  One year ago was when I began my journey on August 19th 2008.  You don’t have to go too many posts back to realize I was a couple of breaths away from a major heart attack or some other major health event to include pre-disposed for Type II diabetes.

A year later I work out an hour each day.  Continue to lose body fat percentage and adding muscle mass.  I look back and my idea of optimal health was where I am today.  Today I realize it is just the beginning of what health I can experience for the rest of my life.  I have gone from hopeless to hope filled.

I spoke to a room full of health care workers this week.  It was a bit intimidating at first.  After all they are the experts and we were being critiqued when it was done.  How we were received would mean if we got to continue to present the other dates and locations.  In the journey to make a difference each step counts.  Stumble, run, walk, or crawl, each person that you touch is another person changed.

We got great reviews!  We got 2 more dates on our calendar.  I got to read comments like “You gave me hope!”, “I learn something new.”, “Very informative!” etc.  Just before the presentation I heard the group behind me wondering about the presentation.  Questions like “Hmm, I wonder if I could get my spouse to lose some weight and get healthy?” , “Is there any way that a person can reach an ideal BMI?”,  and my favorite “Do you think this will be just another DIET program?”

No High blood pressure! No medications

No High blood pressure! No medications

You might guess that one year ago when I walked out to the fair I was feeling like there were no answers to these and many other questions.  I felt that I had tried everything.  We are in the day where celebs are taking on the Acai Berries, the patches and such and saying “No I did not endorse that product and you can’t use my name.”  What was a person to do?  I was dying at an all too rapid rate of speed because I had let it go too far.  Or so I thought.

I found out there is hope.  You can do the work.  You can reap the rewards.  Over the last year I have worked with clients from 16 to 73 and each one has a journey and a story to tell.  It brings me joy daily now and keeps me motivated to continue my own journey.  Now when I look in the mirror I am inspired to keep going instead of despairing to give up trying.  My only regret is that I did not make the journey earlier.  My triumph is that I didn’t give up and life is better than it was 20 years ago.

Is it time to begin your weight loss journey?  Is it time to commit to your health?   What would life look like a year from now if you decided to get started?  Want some help?  We are here and making a difference, won’t you join us on the journey?  Let us show you what optimal health can look like in your life’s journey!

I was talking to one of the doctors on our team last night and asked the question on how it would be best to introduce a weight loss program to a doctor who had not seen it before. What I found may surprise you a bit.

I was told that it is close to impossible to get into a doctor’s office these days. That it didn’t even matter if you where a pharmaceutical rep, you would probably not get in unless you knew them personally. She suggested that our doctors are very busy people and they don’t like to be sold to. I said then how do they find out about programs or new therapies that may assist their patient care? Answer: They either read about it or get curious themselves or hear it from a patient or another doctor.

I had asked this question because we found out in Seattle that the doctors where very hard to get into their offices. Now the ones we did get into already knew the nurse that I was working with and readily admitted they did not have a weight loss solution for their patients. For instance they told us that the average OB/GYN patient having a baby put on more than 50 extra lbs per pregnancy and often that 50 lbs was still there when they became pregnant with baby number two and added even more weight.

So what advice does the medical profession offer? Eat less, exercise more. Or surgery is the other option. Then even with surgery you need to go directly to a bariatric clinic to have that offered because your family doctor most likely will not offer that solution either (mine didn’t even with a BMI of 43). Very few offer any kind of program for lifestyle change and weight loss coaching what so ever. That is why we do what we do. My personal experience was that my doctor never offered me any real solution except medications. Those very same medications had side effects that may help my blood pressure but they would also most likely slow my weight loss attempts even further.

What is a person to do? When they go looking there is all kinds of snake oil and potions. How are they to know? Doctors say eat less. Physical trainers say you can work it off. Then there is the lap bands and gastric bypass solutions. But no one offers a planed program that gets the weight off quickly and easily. Heck no wonder it took me over 20 years to find a solution to my weight even though it has been available for nearly 30 years.

Down 94 lbs and in better shape than I have been in 30 years and it took me less than 7 months to do it. No surgery, no diet pills, and now with the weight off I can concentrate on physical training and continue to improve my longevity and optimize my health. Is your doctor giving you an answer on what to do with your health or are they just giving you another pill? Share your story with me, I would like to know. Have questions about how to have your doctor help you? Just ask I have the information that if really looked at will show them how effective our program is.

So today I am doing my daily search for information (gotta stay informed and motivated).  I run into a link off of twitter that takes me to BBC news.  The UK it seems has done a study on 3 different control groups and found that the 3rd group that was on a restricted calorie diet and still taking the proper nutrients (Example like Medifast), actually had improved brain functioning and less signs of inflammation.  Translates to better memor and less pain in the joints.  Sounds like what I have been experiencing myself.

I am able to work out each day and am functioning at a much better capactiy then I have in 25 years.  Heck at work they have even made a comment about how my energy has changed and how much more I am on top of my game.  So before you blow off the study know they tracked these groups of 50 each for several months and tested them regularly.  I will take the energy, the better energy and the lack of pain any day over the way I felt in August of 2008.  Being 70 lbs lighter is an added bonus as well.

The same article led me to another article on “moobs”,  short for man boobs.  Now being almost 300 lbs when I started I had read that “moobs” where impossible to get rid of.  That the only way to get rid of the fat stores there was surgery.  Me I lean to if I could eat it on,  I could eat if off.  So I am here to tell you that in the UK,  they are seeing a dramatic increase of men getting surgery for this condition.  The article says that about 30% fall into the obese (that would be me) category and the rest have other causes that even involved genetics.

The good news I am here to report is that “moobs” for the obese are not a permanent problem.  With proper exercise and diet you cant take if from a cup size to a flat chest.  Mine is almost where I want it after only 4 months and I was beginning to wonder if I would have bigger breasts then my wife one day.  So men out there, hope springs eternal.  Operations are not the only answer if all that is the cause is obesity.  Fat can be burned off (contrary to some other articles I have read through the years) and you can look and feel better.
