Several of my clients and friends have asked me to start using my hypnosis certification again.  I have to agree with the meal plan and hypnosis it will make life easier for many of our clients to make permanent changes in their lifestyle.  Well that would be “positive changes” as well.  Sorry I could not resist the pun there as I think certain businesses take much more out of your pocket than they should.  This week alone I have had 2 past positively changed patients come to me and ask for a re-tune.

So check out the other site.  It will be more business than blogg and we will over other tools to help your weight loss there.  Here is a quote from our first post.

I found this fascinating quote today:

We all have had times when diet and exercise feels tedious, repetitive and just plain boring. We start to lose our resolve to stay on target after the New Year passes. That is because we are shooting at the wrong target.boisehypnosis.coachtolose.com, How Will This Year Be Different?, Jan 2010

Which direction are we headed in our choices

We are either moving towards health or away from it.

To continue after we act on the conflict we are often not so urgent.  After all you start to feel better because you got started.  You tell yourself I am doing something and making progress.  Now you may be nowhere close to your original goal2.  But, hey you are started in the right direction — even if the situation hasn’t changed much.

Feeling better you don’t feel the emotional connection and you start to take the pressure off yourself.  You start to slack off your plan little by little.  People in this stage often say to me that they are having a hard time staying on their plan.  They don’t realize they are losing motivation because they set it on emotion and not on the outcome.

Because they are feeling better they no longer feel the pressing need to follow up on their plan.  They skip meals, they find reasons not to exercise.  They stop tracking what is going in their mouth.  They return to their original behavior.  I hear them say things like “I am too busy now,  I just don’t have the time. “   It costs too much to eat well or too little time to exercise.  Or my favorite is “I miss this or that too much … I can’t do this any more.”   Now don’t get me wrong I am a lover of food as much as the next person.  That is the only reason my journey finally worked.  If I had tried to maintain my motivation without some serious weight coming off quickly I would have most likely had the same results I had struggled with for over 20 years.

In a short time the weight returns and this is one of the major reasons that so many people yo-yo diet.  In this journey with myself and others I have learned that anyone can be successful, but the ying and yang of that is that anyone can fail.  The journey has to have a destination and the motivation has to come from reaching that destination no matter what it takes.  Sure everyone will experience a detour once in a while.  It is what people do with that detour that makes the difference between living longer, healthier, and happier active lives.  You see along the way what I have learned there are two choices every moment we make when it comes to health.  We are either moving towards wellness or we are moving towards sickness.  There is very little middle ground on the journey to health.

I heard this talk done recently what health coach’s roles are.  Originally when the talk began I thought it would be terribly politically incorrect to openly discuss how it made me feel.  Then recently I have been visiting another blog called “My Big Fat Spouse”.  Be forewarned if you decide to find it out there in the blogosphere, that it is not for the easily offended.  In reading people’s choices I realized that some times we just need to hear the truth.  Some times a lot of tough love is needed.

The jest of the blog is that it is where spouses come when they have lost hope there will be a change in their partner who refuses to lose weight and take care of themselves.  The advice ranges from dump the slob or slobette to some minor hope that they will change.  Now I am taking on both ends of the spectrum.  You see this subject is very close to home for me.  Basically the progression goes from asking for help, to being turned off by the way they look, and eventually how lazy and broke they are.  All of it a progression of justification to get them out of their life because they see no chance of changes.   I was off the scale morbidly obese.  What if my spouse had stumbled across this site and gave up on me after 30 plus years.  So not only was I fat (although no one but a small honest child would say it to me), I was level 3 morbidly obese.

The complaints take a normal course of progression.  The spouse starts to put on weight.  Then they usually end up with various medical problems to include sleep apnea, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes , and various other weight related health issues.  So not only was I tired but each day I found new reasons not to be active because it all hurt so much.

Lastly I was broke.  I didn’t have the energy to use what I was born with to make additional income and things where breaking down and bills were piling up.  So all of a sudden I realized the talk I was listening to (although maybe politically incorrect) was describing my life a year ago.  Why would I think if it described my life, it would not describe others.

What I found out was in visiting “My Big Fat Spouse” was that it described a lot of people’s lives.  It is becoming a story in fact that I am hearing more and more each day.  I know the why’s behind it.  I also know there is a way out of all of it.  However it is only for those that want to change.  If not they will continue down the same path I was headed even if it kills them.

Let me give you a for instance.  Today I had a talk with someone about our weight loss program.  The next presentation is a 20 minute drive from where they live.  Oh that was too far.  Ok let me come to your home.  Oh no, that won’t be needed.  Translation,  I am not ready to get serious about my weight loss.  It is not really a priority in my life.  I can’t help this person.

On the other hand I met another person last night that not only sees the future of their weight loss but in the same discussion they asked me if they could become a coach and help others.  When I explained that they could and we a full team behind them and training they were ecstatic and hopeful.  They already have their eyes on what they can do for others to help get them healthy and gain more of their life back.  This person is ready, their goal is already beyond themselves and what’s in it for them.  They will do the full journey to health, energy and finances.  So send me more of these.  Cause the rest can sit back and watch but I for one intend to work with those that are ready!

Excuses are useless and they change your tomorrows.  Today is the time to look in the mirror and ask yourself if you are happy with what you see.  If not learn to accept yourself where you are and start making the steps toward where you want to be.  One step at a time is the way any journey is done.  What will be your first step?

I am always reading on how to make improvements in myself and was reminded this morning that some people need small incremental changes to begin any journey. You know the saying “Inch by Inch, anything is a chinch.” Others (like me) have to dive in and get something going right away so they can see the rewarded effort. Everyone is different in what they need.

Personally I think that is why having a health coach is so rewarding. I can customize my program or the way I work with someone to fit their personality. I have those that want to do it on their own and just give me the 5 mins of how they did. Now they often leave out the details that would help me tune their weight loss, but they are happy with their results and that they have conquered the weight loss monster. Others want to have their hand held, or be held accountable for each of their choices. They report every bit and every meal with all the details of the struggle and triumphs. Funny thing about this group is they often do much better on the program. They have the basics down of keeping track of what goes into their body and how much energy they expend in exercise down.

Now the ones that want to do it on their own are successful. Their main motivation is to get the weight off NOW! What I work with them on is that to keep it off they need to develop the same habits that the other group starts from the get go. Something I had to learn for myself now that I am transitioning into a maintenance phase of my weight loss journey. When I monitoring and track, my weight continues to improve, I stay on track. When I don’t monitor, I can gain unwanted pounds even if I think I made some good choices. It is all about awareness and the facts.

Weight changes daily, based on amount of water, food intake and exercise. There can be added muscle gain as well as fat gain depending on how you monitor. A simple scale does not know the difference. Back it up with a tape measure or some clothes that fit tight on you and now you start to see the actual difference. Tracking teaches you how your body responds to different foods, times of day, and types of exercise. You learn more about yourself every day that way.

Oh and paying attention means you don’t slowly slip back into the obesity zone and one day wake up and ask yourself “How did I get back here again?”

Have a great Monday everyone!

We all here the news, yet we keep doing what we want.  We know the facts behind the obesity crises in our country and yet we eat what we want.  We know as a country that exercise is good for us and that in our later days it will make us more flexible and enjoy life more.  Yet we make the choices of the day based on what we want.

I read a recent article that said that a group of educated individuals where trying to figure out a way to legislate public policy that would help correct the obesity problem in the United States.  As far as I can tell there is only one way to do this.  Teach people about how they make decisions and inspire them to make better choices.

We love to hear success stories!  We are inspired by reality programs when someone conquers their worst fear or struggle.  Yet we sit back and watch and think, if only I could get someone to drive me past my struggle and fear I too could have that success.  Now don’t get me wrong we all need a mentor or a coach to help with making lifestyle changes.  However no matter how good the coach is,  the decision has to start with us first.

It goes back to the why each time.  Why lose weight?  Why get healthy?  Why do the work and apply the discipline in your life to make optimal health a priority instead of a dream we see on TV?   We have to sort through all the emotions and feelings those questions bring up to get to a level of decision that it is time now to do something about it.

Watch for more on this in upcoming articles as we discuss how to set into place the basic habits of health that can change your life and the way you live it from here on.

It occurred to me this morning that when I look back on my own personal journey there was a beginning.  Often when people hear my routine for reaching more optimal health goals, they often reply “Oh I could never do that!”  They give up on themselves even before they can start.

Mary Poppins
Image via Wikipedia

Well Mary Poppins taught many of us (does this date me a bit?) that you “Start at the very beginning,  It is a very good place to start.”  Now she was singing about “Doe Ray Me…” but there was a hidden wisdom there for all of us.  Whenever we want to learn something new, we start from the beginning.

The health and fitness industry tells us diets don’t work in the same paragraphs that say diet and exercise are the only answer.  Doctors throw medications and pills at us without “the spoonful of sugar”.  Marketers have the secret if you only want to pay money for it and new miracle products spring up every day it seems.

Let’s start at the beginning where I teach those I coach.  Let’s start with getting some success with your weight goals and make it easier for when you are ready to introduce exercise in the form of movement for your fitness level.  No secret and I just shared it with you for no charge.  I start people with a planned program.  They get results and they are motivated to move to the next level.

So you don’t have to take giant steps and do it all from day one.  Baby steps are a great place to start.  All journeys start at the beginning, how fast you travel and what you learn along the way will depend on who you take with you along the path.

May you be blessed with the mentor and coach that is ready to go that distance with you.
But Start!

This Poem represents so much of what I see in people when I work with them and their goals.  Read it for yourself.  Put it where you can see it every day.  Sure times are difficult around the world, never underestimate the power of the human spirit.

I Do Not Choose To Be A Common Man
By American Statesman Dean Alfange  Born December 2nd ,  1899

I Do Not Choose To Be A Common Man

It is my right to be uncommon—if I can.

I seek opportunity—not security.  I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me.

I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed.

I refuse to barter incentive for a dole.  I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia.

I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout.  I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat.

It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say,  “This I have done.”

So what is it you are doing for yourself today?  I choose each day not to be common.  Common is obesity, common is struggling for satisfaction instead of living and moving towards it.  Will I fail?  Yes at times I will.  Those are the learning times.  Those are the strengthening times.  Those are the times when I find out what I am made of and what I need to work on.  Sometimes those are the times to just listen within and be at peace to know I have done my best for that day and rest in it.

Joy is strength!  Peace is Power.  Choose today to be Uncommon!
